Apr 13 Spaces with Andrea Chalupa

Chatting with Scott & Mo and the Transatlantic Crew
Andrea Chalupa

About last week’s Spaces…

We were thrilled to host the amazing Andrea Chalupa, journalist, researcher, Ukraine-Russia expert, and host of GaslitNation Podcast on our April 13 EuroFile@6 Spaces.

Based on 15 years of research and her book ‘Orwell and the Refugees: The Untold Story of Animal Farm,’ Andrea wrote the screenplay for the film ‘Mr. Jones.’ It was meticulously researched. It’s a glimpse of the Holodomor-the genocide of Ukrainians by famine and other means during the Stalinist era in the Soviet Union- through the eyes of Gareth Jones.

IBDM: “Directed by Agnieska Holland, it is based on real events: the dramatic thriller "Gareth Jones" chronicles a British investigative journalist as he travels deep into the Soviet Union to uncover an international conspiracy. His life-or-death journey inspires George Orwell's ‘Animal Farm’.”

I’ve watched the film three times, and every single time, I was completely transported into Stalin’s horror history. What was also shocking for me was how the West appeased Stalin and covered up the genocide of the Ukrainians. The West continued to do business with the Soviet Union and actually celebrated it.

We asked Andrea to speak with us about the Holodomor, Russian history, and her research because Putin is following the same Stalin genocide playbook today in Ukraine. This time it’s not only death by famine and deportation to gulags, but Putin’s military death machine is killing Ukrainian civilians with its bombs, missiles and bullets.

We had a bit of a tech glitch with Spaces, so it took some time for me to get Andrea connected. That gave us time to touch on other topics surrounding the on-going genocidal war in Ukraine, and an up-date on the French elections with Nathalie Vogel. As luck would have it, Christopher Burgess dropped by to comment on matters of intelligence.

Our warm thanks to Andrea, who generously shared her time, insights and knowledge on Ukraine and Russia, and, of course, to the Transatlantic Crew for their expert input and engaging questions.

Please join us on Thursdays at 6 pm CET on EuroFile@6 for chatter about Russia’s war on Ukraine and an array of geo-political issues effecting Europe and the entire globe. Don’t be shy & DM us your questions and comments for up-coming Spaces or ones we’ve already done.
