Mart Kuldkepp is an Estonian Scandinavianist, historian and translator. He is Associate Professor of Scandinavian History and Politics at University College London. Between 2011 and 2015, he worked in various positions in the Tartu University Scandinavian languages department, including as head of department and programme director. His main research topics are Estonian and Scandinavian political and cultural contacts in the twentieth century, questions of Estonians' nordic identity, and Old Norse literature and culture.
I had come across Mart Kuldkepp’s thread in the summer when there was a lull in combat on the ground.
The two principle appeasement narratives discussed in his thread have been playing out in Italian legacy and social media since Russia’s renewal of aggression against Ukraine on February 24. What is prevalent in the Italian infosphere is the ‘Ukraine needs to de-escalate’ narrative, which amounts to supporting a de facto unilateral disarmament of Ukraine. Italian proponents of this line never mention Russia having to do the same.
