Stories we’re following…
The breath-taking pace of the Ukrainian Forces forward action was the focus of my attention all day. Maps changed almost hourly. I’m sure we were thrilled by the liberation of so many villages and Izyum. We’re also afraid that the liberation forces will find mass graves, as they did in Bucha.
Zelensky: Ukrainian troops liberate more than 30 settlements in Kharkiv Oblast. President Zelensky said that the Ukrainian military gradually keeps restoring control over settlements previously occupied by the Russian army in the region.
Ukrainian troops confirm entering Izyum, Kharkiv Oblast. Ukraine's 25th Airborne Brigade published a video of its soldiers in Izyum. Earlier on Sept. 10, Russian proxies said that Russian troops had withdrawn from Izyum and a few other settlements in Kharkiv Oblast.
Kupyansk, the biggest city in Russian-occupied parts of Kharkiv region and the seat of the occupation “government” is back under Ukrainian control as the swift Ukrainian offensive continues. Just reported: Russians are retreating from Kremmina as well.
President Zelensky has said he has spoken to President Macron about the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. “Our position is the only way to protect Europe from a nuclear disaster is to demilitarize the plant,” the Ukrainian President wrote on Twitter this afternoon.
Russia has deployed more than 80% of its ground forces in Ukraine - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Zelensky awards CEO of Turkey's Baykar with Order of Merit. President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Kyiv with Haluk Bayraktar, CEO of Turkish arms maker Baykar, and discussed further cooperation with the company, which has supplied Bayraktar combat drones to Ukraine. They also discussed plans to build a Baykar plant in Ukraine.
President Zelensky paid tribute to both Ukrainian and foreign journalists who have been killed covering the war in Ukraine. “They all made a significant contribution to our victory in the media confrontation with Russia, to break through Russian propaganda and spread simply the truth about the war, about our independence.”
European Commission recommends annulment of Russian citizens' existing visas in some cases. On Sept. 9, the European Commission published guidelines advising EU member states not to issue long-term visas to Russians and to annul Russians' existing visas "if necessary."
Report: rebuilding Ukraine to cost estimated $349 billion. According to a joint assessment by the World Bank, the European Commission, and the Ukrainian government, repairing the figure is expected to increase as the war continues.
Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, reiterated the Russian narrative that Western supply of weapons will not bring peace and that "adding fuel to fire" will only complicate the problem: "Large amounts of materiel falling into the wrong hands will cause endless trouble and create security risks in Ukraine and the wider area".
German opposition leader calls for sending 100 Marder armored vehicles to Ukraine. “Freedom is priceless. An attack on Ukraine is an attack on the post-war European peace order," said Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union.
Reznikov: Russia will face a new 'Nuremberg' trial after their defeat. "I am convinced that the tribunal and the future 'Nuremberg' await them all, even if they are judged in absentia or posthumously," Ukraine's Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov told RBK Ukraine.
Russian Duma officials fined after calling for Putin's removal. Russian Deputy Dmitry Palyuga along with other elected officials from St. Petersburg on Sept. 7 called on Russia's State Duma to impeach Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for what they say are crimes of treason.
King Charles III was proclaimed King at the Accession Council in the state apartments of St James’s Palace. His son William, whose new title is the Prince of Wales was in attendance.
Saint Javelin, Who is Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi?
One of the brilliant architects of the successful counteroffensive operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the east of Ukraine is the commander of the Ground Forces, Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Syrskyi developed a plan for a counteroffensive on Balakleya, and it became the first liberated city within this counteroffensive. At first, the General Staff was skeptical of this plan, but Syrsky managed to convince the country's military leadership of its necessity.
Syrskyi also developed a plan to liberate Kupiansk, which the occupiers turned into one of their main logistics centers. If the Ukrainian Armed Forces recapture Kupiansk, the Russian forces will be forced to withdraw from the north and east of the Kharkiv region.
In Syrskyi “resume”, there is a withdrawal of the Ukrainian military from Debaltsevo in 2015 and the organization of the defense of Kyiv in the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Timothy Snyder, Ukraine Holds the Future- Foreign Affairs
Should Russia continue its illegal blockade of the Black Sea, it could starve Africans and Asians, who depend on Ukrainian grain, precipitating a durable international crisis that will make it all but impossible to deal with common threats such as climate change. A Russian victory would strengthen fascists and other tyrants, as well as nihilists who see politics as nothing more than a spectacle designed by oligarchs to distract ordinary citizens from the destruction of the world. This war, in other words, is about establishing principles for the twenty-first century. It is about policies of mass death and about the meaning of life in politics. It is about the possibility of a democratic future.
Angela Giuffrida, Cracks show over Russia as Italy’s far-right alliance heads for election win- The Guardian
Just days later, cracks between Meloni and Salvini, the leader of the League, were on display at a business conference in Cernobbio, off the shores of Lake Como, where they disagreed on one of the most important themes of the moment – sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Although both Brothers of Italy and the League have condemned the war, Salvini, who once heaped praise on Vladimir Putin, even signing a cooperation pact with the Russian president’s United Russia party in 2017, said the sanctions were not working and were instead “bringing Europe and Italy to their knees”.
