Thank you Monique for these super detailed updates.
No thank you to Marjorie - please take a seat and shut up!
The Georgia situation feels like it came out of nowhere (at least for those of us not in Europe) but has clearly been bubbling for sometime. So grateful for the Georgian people refusing to accept anything less than democracy. But also - dumb question in the offing - how does an Oligarch become the PM? Apart from $$$$
It’s a long story. I’ll find a proper explainer. Most recently, in 2008, Russian invaded and took 20% of Georgian territory: Abkhazia and Ossetia. They continue to borderise these areas (erode the border by illegally taking land). Natia Seskuria is the leading expert on this. Georgians have been fighting against their country veering toward Russia for quite sometime but it accelerated after Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine. This particular protest is the largest and I’ve never seen them go this long- we’re at 16 days. They’re fighting for their country.
I am only on IG regularly enough but will be re-posting some info on this over there (for whatever good it does!). Unfortunately the current campus chaos and the war in Gaza has superseded any other news so it's hard to get anything else out there.
